Alvita Batres graduated from ALG Certificate in Leadership and Collaboration in our very first cohort. She works at the center for adult education San Martín de Porres in the eastern part of Guatemala in the Izabal Department. Alvita is a Defender of Human Rights, with a focus in the areas of Social-Political Participation, Health, Education, Economic Independence. She is the representative of the Women’s Organization of Izabal, a group of professional volunteers that strive to meet the needs of women in the department through accompaniment, literacy, skills training, leadership development, education on sexual health, the reproduction, and self-esteem among many other things.
Of her time with ALG, Alvita says “I love the Circle of Trust. It allowed me to open my heart to new emotions and opportunities. I found a family full of love and attention. ALG sustained me and continues to give me the energy to continue moving forward. These ties are so strong that I continue to miss my class sessions, the moments of conviviality and the exciting reunions.”
Despite having faced threats and political persecution, Alvita wouldn’t change a thing. She loves her work and will continue as long as God provides her the power to continue serving. Serving others gives her life, and each morning when she arrives at the center where the classes are held and she sees the women waiting at the door who greet her with a smile and cup of coffee, she is motivated to keep doing the work, the work she feels the universe continues to permit her to do.
