This May we honor Sergio Lopez as our Leader of the Month. Sergio
works at a non-profit hospital in Retalhuleu as the General Operations
Coordinator. The opportunity to help people of limited resources with their
health problems is what most inspires Sergio to lead well. His biggest challenge
has been to lead an organization for the public when there is insecurity around
where and when the resources will come that allow them to meet their service
goals. In overcoming this challenge, Sergio has found that honesty and the good
management of the available resources has aided him immeasurably.
Externally, he has relied on the confidence given him by his Board of
Directors and the help of an foreign organization called Faith in Practice.
Three things stick out to Sergio as the most powerful lessons of his
time with ALG. First, the learning of the Circle of Trust, that taught him how
to respect the space of all humans and, more than anything, taught him how to
know himself in a more intimate way. The second was simply the lived shared
experience with the other leaders from across Guatemala in his cohort. Lastly,
the lessons and sessions taught by teachers from all over the world, which felt
perfectly fit with the work that he and his cohort members were doing as change
leaders and NGO workers.
